Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What is ASD:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects social communication, behavior, and interests. People with ASD may struggle with making eye contact, understanding social cues, and engaging in typical conversations. They may also have restricted interests or repetitive behaviors.

Why an assessment might be necessary:
If a child is having difficulties with social interactions, communication, or behaviors that are not typical for their age, an assessment can help determine whether ASD is the cause. Early diagnosis and intervention can make a significant difference in helping the child develop the skills needed for daily life and social interaction.

An Autism Assessment involves evaluating whether an individual exhibits traits or behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This comprehensive assessment may include observations of behavior, interviews with parents or caregivers, and standardized diagnostic tools. The goal is to determine the presence of autism-related behaviors, challenges in social communication, and restrictive/repetitive patterns of behavior. An additional goal of assessment is it determine the best supports for the young person and their family.

Typical assessment process includes:

-Semi-structured interview with parents (ADI-R)

-Clinical observation of the young person (ADOS)

-Teacher questionnaires

-Report and report feedback
